Saquon Barkley Makes Madden NFL History
Saquon Barkley has achieved a notable milestone as the first player from the Philadelphia Eagles to grace the cover of a Madden NFL video game since former quarterback Donovan McNabb in 2005.
However, unlike McNabb, who was a product of the Eagles’ franchise, Barkley’s history is a bit different—he was previously with the rival New York Giants, which makes his current status a little controversial for some. For many fans, his departure from New York is still considered one of the franchise’s major missteps, especially after he led the Eagles to a Super Bowl victory and shattered the team’s rushing record.
“It really feels like they’ve made a big mistake there,” McNabb commented on the Giants’ choice, reflecting on Barkley’s impact on the Eagles.
Interestingly, McNabb thinks of the Giants’ decision to let Barkley go, but he has his own reflections on mistakes made in the past, particularly concerning the Eagles’ past dealings. After the 2012 season, the Eagles let go of long-time coach Andy Reid, and McNabb believes this was a significant error. “I was the first big trade after Reid’s era; mistakes were made,” he said, indicating a sense of unfinished business with the organization.
Since then, Reid has flourished with the Kansas City Chiefs, winning three Super Bowls and arguably reaching new heights as a coach. McNabb’s views suggest that the Eagles’ decision to part ways with Reid was a greater error than the Giants’ release of Barkley.
“Honestly, the Eagles really lost out when they let go of Andy,” McNabb mused when comparing the two situations.
Despite Reid’s impressive coaching record in Philadelphia, where he ended with a .583 winning percentage and a playoff record of 10-9, he has achieved even more success since joining the Chiefs in 2013. Currently, he boasts a .730 record and an 18-8 playoff record, indicating a level of success that has been hard to match.
To put things in perspective, the Eagles did come out on top against the Chiefs in this year’s Super Bowl, which, you have to admit, is a little ironic given their past.
Barkley was a pivotal factor in the success of that Eagles championship season. “So, good luck to everyone in the future,” McNabb concluded, looking back while also wishing the best for his former rivals.
