Clinton Defends Biden Amid Concerns About Cognitive Health
Former President Clinton spoke in defense of President Biden regarding reports suggesting cognitive decline. However, he expressed concerns about Biden’s busy schedule leading up to his first debate of the 2024 campaign.
“Whenever I was around him, his mind seemed clear, his judgment solid,” Clinton said during an appearance. “But I do wonder, what was happening just ten days before his debate? Was it really wise for him to travel to Europe twice and California at his age?”
He questioned the decisions made by White House staff, emphasizing that there are valid concerns surrounding Biden’s extensive travel right before such an important event.
Notably, Biden returned from Italy for the G7 Summit just thirteen days before last year’s debate, a trip that followed a packed schedule in France for the D-Day anniversary.
Reflecting on his debate performance, Biden admitted to donors about a week later, “I traveled too much right before the debate. I didn’t heed my staff’s advice…and I almost dozed off on stage.”
Clinton also reminded the audience of the challenges faced by past presidents, such as Reagan and Wilson, cautioning that people should focus on future leadership rather than past concerns. “It’s important to think about what’s ahead, not just what we’ve seen before,” he stated.
Clinton’s comments come at a time when Biden’s age and mental acuity are under close scrutiny, particularly following the release of a significant new book on the 2024 election. Just this week, former President Trump called for an investigation into Biden’s mental fitness.
