On Thursday, Brazilian federal police summoned former president Jair Bolsonaro to provide testimony in Brasilia regarding an investigation into his son, Eduardo, who sought political asylum in the United States this year.
Reports indicate that Bolsonaro’s appearance was ordered by Justice Alexandre de Moraes, who initiated the inquiry into Eduardo Bolsonaro over claims that former President Donald Trump was allegedly “working” to “punish him.”
Eduardo Bolsonaro is a former president’s son and currently a member of Brazil’s parliament. Earlier this year, he requested asylum in the US, citing a campaign against him led by de Moraes. Last week, de Moraes launched a probe into allegations against Eduardo concerning actions aimed at obstructing investigations into criminal activities and possibly undermining democratic institutions.
Brazil’s Attorney General, Paulo Gonette, noted that Eduardo used a “threatening tone” in the US to deter legal action against Jair Bolsonaro. He suggested that Eduardo was clearly behind attempts to impose US sanctions against de Moraes, who was allegedly attempting to “force” actions by the Brazilian government. As part of the investigation, de Moraes ordered that Brazilian authorities monitor Eduardo’s social media content.
Additionally, a Brazilian outlet reported on recent US statements regarding visa restrictions targeting officials involved in censoring American citizens, which some perceive as a strategic move.
The Attorney General’s Office indicated that Jair Bolsonaro might have provided financial backing to his son, raising questions about his direct involvement in Eduardo’s activities against de Moraes. Anticipated testimony from the former president may clarify his knowledge of his son’s actions in the US.
Close sources to Bolsonaro mentioned he would assert that he had no prior awareness of Eduardo’s plans and was unaware of his travels abroad. There’s an assertion that he supported his son’s financial needs, seeing it as a family obligation.
However, claims emerged that Bolsonaro organized Eduardo’s trip to the US, although the former president argued that he didn’t speak English, which made coordinated actions difficult.
Moreover, Bolsonaro informed Brazil’s Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira of the possibility of being questioned about Eduardo’s actions abroad.
Lindbergh Farias, a leftist MP associated with Brazil’s ruling Workers’ Party, spoke to reporters after providing testimony in the investigation, labeling Eduardo’s actions as self-sabotaging, with significant implications for their consequences.
While no US sanctions have been placed on de Moraes, Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva recently criticized such measures, stating they were unacceptable and expressing his support for the justice system. He emphasized the need for respect among nations and criticized Eduardo Bolsonaro for provocatively involving the US in Brazil’s affairs, labeling it non-patriotic.
Lula condemned Eduardo for seeking US intervention in Brazilian politics, deeming it unacceptable for a sitting congressperson to engage in such behavior.
