Florida high school grad performs backflip into classmate during viral onstage celebration mishap: ‘This can’t be happening’

During a graduation ceremony at Nova Southeastern University’s Rick Case Arena, a Florida high school senior, Gavin Robinson, turned a planned celebration into an unexpected incident. As he attempted a backflip on stage, he collided with a fellow graduate named Amelia, leaving the audience in astonishment.

It was June 1st, and 17-year-old Robinson wanted to create a memorable moment during the ceremony. He began his stunt but, unexpectedly, was struck by Amelia, who had just been called to the stage.

“When I left the air and felt like I had hit a classmate, I was like, ‘Oh, this won’t happen,'” Robinson recalled, reflecting on the incident.

As Amelia waved to the crowd and advanced up the platform, the mishap occurred. Robinson ended up on the floor, while Amelia reached to secure her hat, both left in shock by the collision.

It was a moment neither students, nor school officials, anticipated. Robinson had envisioned the backflip as a unique way to celebrate performing in front of so many people.

The two had only met two days before during rehearsal, where Robinson shared with Amelia his plans for the backflip.

Amelia recorded the incident and posted it on TikTok, where it quickly gained popularity, racking up over 3.7 million views in just three days.

Fortunately, Amelia was not seriously hurt and took some responsibility for the incident, mentioning she had been distracted and didn’t heed Robinson’s warning.

“Hello, I’m all good and not injured,” she commented on the video. “Please don’t send him hate!!”

After the ceremony, when they returned to their seats, they found themselves laughing about what had happened. Robinson noted that a friend began joking about it in their group chat soon after.

He was surprised by how quickly the video attracted attention, as he never expected that a mere ten seconds of footage would go viral.

“At first, I wasn’t thinking anything special. I thought it would be a flop. Then, three hours later, it went viral,” he said, also acknowledging the mixed responses he received regarding his stunt.

Despite the backlash, he stands by his decision to perform the backflip, believing it made him stand out during graduation. “Looking back, I’m 1,000% proud of attempting a backflip. I think it was a positive thing, despite the outcome,” he added, taking ownership of the incident but recognizing that if Amelia hadn’t moved forward, he might have landed it successfully.
