Stars part ways with Peter DeBoer following disappointing playoff exit

Dallas Stars Fire Coach Peter DeBoer

The Dallas Stars have let go of coach Peter DeBoer. This decision comes just over a week after their disappointing loss in Game 5 of the Western Conference Finals. Many are calling this season a letdown for the team.

General Manager Jim Nill expressed, “After careful consideration, we believe we need a new voice in the locker room to get closer to our goal of winning the Stanley Cup.” He also thanked DeBoer for his contributions over the past three seasons.

In that Game 5, which ended in a 6-3 defeat, DeBoer made a notable choice to pull star goalie Jake Oettinger after he allowed two goals on the first two shots within just over seven minutes. This decision drew considerable criticism.

DeBoer, reflecting on the situation, stated, “As a person or goalkeeper, there’s no bigger fan of Jake Oettinger than I am.” He seemed to weigh the pressures and potential consequences of his actions, noting, “There’s one motivation. Does that mean we survive this and reach Game 6?”

This loss symbolizes a frustrating trend for DeBoer in his third season, as the Stars were unable to advance past the Western Conference Finals.

Oettinger had faced a league-high 503 shots in 18 playoff games, posting a record of 36-18-4 during the regular season, which helped Dallas secure the second seed in their division.

DeBoer commented on his decision to switch goalies, saying, “When you’re in that moment, you think we need to stop the bleeding here. Our team looked tentative. We’re down 2-0. The back of your mind tells you he might be a bit tired. He’s been carrying us through two rounds.”

Internally, there were rising tensions, with players reportedly expressing dissatisfaction with DeBoer’s strategies in the days leading up to his dismissal.

Oettinger offered his take after the season ended, noting, “The reality is, if I made one or two of those saves, I’m still playing in the game. The way I’m viewing it is how can I make it better?”

The Stars aren’t alone in their search for new coaching talent this offseason. Other teams, including the Rangers, Flyers, Kraken, and Bruins, among others, have also made coaching changes.

During his time with Dallas, DeBoer amassed a record of 149-68-29 over three seasons, including a playoff record of 29-27. With over 17 seasons in the NHL, his career coaching record stands at 662-447-152 across various teams, including the Panthers, Devils, Sharks, and Golden Knights before joining the Stars for the 2022-23 season.
