Controversial Program at YMCA Raises Concerns

The Stephens Family YMCA in Champaign, Illinois is gearing up to host a program that some parents find troubling, particularly regarding its focus on the sexuality of young children.

Adding to the controversy, the YMCA—associated with Christian nonprofit values—has partnered with activist groups that aim to provide “gender-affirming” clothing for kids of various ages.

On their website, the YMCA highlights a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), stating it strives to “prioritize fairness” in all their endeavors.

Indeed, the Stephens Family YMCA is adamant about implementing Christian principles, despite the apparent conflicts with their current initiatives.

Part of their DEI focus includes the upcoming 2025 Summer Camp, which is described in their materials as catering specifically to “LGBTQ+ youth and those from LGBTQ+ families,” and aims to create a “safe space” for these children.

Scheduled camps will occur from June 23rd to 27th for children in grades two through five, and another from July 14th to 18th for those in grades six to nine, with a fee of $250 for each session.

The intention behind the camp seems to be centered on letting these young individuals express their true selves.

Additionally, the YMCA plans to collaborate with local activist groups that distribute gender-related clothing for children, which has raised eyebrows.

Reports indicate that they will provide free items like breast binders and specialized underwear, which are meant to alter appearances to fit gender identity. It’s noteworthy, and perhaps alarming, that they’ve even invited donations of used items, provided they are in good condition.

The intention behind these offerings remains unclear, as is the rationale for such programs at a facility that professes Christian values.

The situation appears particularly challenging for parents with children of varying gender identities, as the YMCA’s locker room policy suggests that facilities should align with self-identified genders, though families with children of opposite genders are advised to use family-style facilities.

Marre, an executive director at the American Parents Coalition, expressed concerns, questioning the relationship between the YMCA’s policies and the safety of children attending summer camps.

She firmly stated, “Children deserve enjoyable summer experiences free from agendas, and parents need transparency from the organizations they trust.”

As of now, there has been no response from the Stephens Family YMCA regarding these concerns.
