Minnesota Politician Advocates for Gender-Affirming Care

Minnesota Representative Lee Finke, a trans politician, has recently addressed the topic of “gender-affirming care” for minors. There are plans for legislation in 2023 aimed at allowing children access to surgeries and hormones.

Finke, part of the Minnesota Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party, has labeled sex-based categories in sports as discriminatory. Interestingly, shortly after his remarks, the implications of his views started to manifest within his own state.

“They’re kids who just want to participate and enjoy sports,” he stated.

In an interview, Finke defended the participation of boys in girls’ sports, asserting that men could indeed transition to women. “Trans girls are girls,” he emphasized. “They should have the same opportunities to play and engage in sports as other kids in our communities. They haven’t done anything wrong; they’re just kids who enjoy participating.”

However, Finke’s acknowledgment of concerns surrounding male athletes in women’s sports seemed dismissive. He characterized policies that differentiate based on gender as “discriminatory” and claimed they undermine the core purpose of youth sports, which is about promoting participation and personal growth for all.

Shortly after Finke’s comments, a situation unfolded that illustrated the practicality of his ideology, raising questions about its impact on young female athletes.

On a recent Wednesday evening, during a Minnesota softball semi-final, a 17-year-old male pitcher, now identifying as a girl, dominated a female competitor. Charlie Rosenberger, who had changed his name to Marissa and transitioned legally at a young age, pitched the entire game and helped his team reach the state finals.

Reports revealed that Marissa stands at 6 feet tall and had her birth certificate amended to reflect her gender change shortly after turning nine. This was done through a petition by her mother.

In a follow-up game for the state finals, Rosenberger pitched a shutout while allowing only three hits, leading the team to a 6-0 victory and clinching the Minnesota State Championship.

The reaction from observers has been intense. Some expressed concern over the implications for women’s sports, with one comment noting, “Title IX is effectively negated in Minnesota. Gender ideology has supplanted women’s rights.” Others remarked on Rosenberger’s impressive performance in what is traditionally a female category.

This situation starkly contrasts with Finke’s optimistic view on trans athletes’ participation in sports. The reality of male involvement in female athletics is more complex than he originally suggested, revealing potential drawbacks that may significantly affect the young women in those competitions.

“These young trans athletes are simply playing the sports they love alongside supportive peers, in line with local laws,” Finke remarked in defense. “They deserve recognition and encouragement, just like every other young person.”
