Media Believed They Had Trump Cornered Over Egg Prices — It Backfired Rapidly

Corporate media initially thought that President Donald Trump was cornered by the issue of rising egg prices, but those prices have since seen a significant decline.

Since Trump took office on January 20th, egg prices have dropped by more than 61%. This drop comes after hitting an all-time high of $8 per dozen in early March. The average cost for a dozen eggs was $6.41 right after Trump’s second term began, but as of Friday, it is now $2.57, according to various economic sources.

Corporate media attempted to shift the focus of criticism from former President Joe Biden onto Trump regarding these rising prices. They highlighted the expensive cost of eggs and even fact-checked Trump’s statements while predicting that he wouldn’t be able to reduce costs.

The Associated Press reported on March 7 that Democrats viewed rising egg prices as a crucial issue for recovery. The Department of Agriculture projected a 41% increase in egg prices by 2025, with Democrats blaming Trump for this expected rise. PBS also published an article arguing that Trump had failed to keep his promise to lower egg prices.

Trump acknowledged the recent drop in wholesale egg prices but, according to experts, his strategies to combat avian flu might take time to yield tangible benefits for egg farmers.

In February, the New York Times ran headlines suggesting that inflation was a pressing issue for Trump. They claimed he needed a robust economy to effectively address rising egg prices linked to avian flu disruptions. Jeffrey Roach, an economist, mentioned that the spike in egg prices signified the largest increase in almost ten years.

Some media outlets attempted to fact-check Trump’s statements regarding falling prices. Despite significant drops, reporters noted that wholesale prices hadn’t translated into lower retail costs for consumers, leaving them still facing high prices.

In April, both CBS News and CNN accused Trump of misrepresenting the price drop. CNN specifically mentioned that Trump’s claim of a 94% decrease in wholesale prices since the start of his second term was misleading.

Further, an op-ed by Agriculture Secretary Brook Rollins laid out a five-stage plan to lower egg prices, which emphasizes financial relief for farmers, biosecurity measures, and easing restrictions on egg producers.

As egg prices began to decline, reports indicated that consumers were still hesitant to pay more for groceries overall. Recent articles suggested that Trump’s tariffs could impact the declining trend just as prices were starting to normalize.

Various op-eds highlighted that Trump had not met his promises regarding egg prices, with some claiming he had ruined Easter for Americans due to soaring costs. Media discussions often reflected a similar narrative, with some falsely claiming that egg prices hadn’t dropped at all since Trump took office.

While platforms like MSNBC and CNN aired segments discussing the contradiction in Trump’s statements, Trump continued to assert that he would work to lower grocery prices. The discussion remains polarized, with many Americans expressing concerns about the overall affordability of eggs and groceries under his administration.
