President Trump remarked that California Governor Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass are expected to address the ongoing unrest in Los Angeles. This unrest stems from protests against Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) that have unsettled the city.
According to city officials, the Los Angeles Police Department has largely stayed uninvolved in the violent protests, during which demonstrators damaged vehicles and property. The LAPD confirmed their lack of response.
Newsom mentioned that the federal government has deployed 2,000 soldiers to help manage the situation.
Trump took to social media, stating, “If California Governor Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass can’t do their jobs, the federal government will step in to address the problems, including the riots and looting.” This was part of a post on a platform.
White House Press Secretary Caroline Leavitt supported Trump’s view, describing the protests as “viciously attacking” ICE and border patrols.
In contrast, Newsom criticized the federal response as “inflammatory,” arguing that sending in soldiers undermines public trust.
He emphasized that local officials would have prompt access to law enforcement support, stating that while collaboration is essential, there’s no need for federal intervention at this time.
Following a surge of anger from a Friday incident, over 800 people gathered to protest, leading to 44 arrests.
Homeland Security has reported a total of 118 arrests in Los Angeles County and additional arrests during demonstrations in New York City this week, according to reports.
There were also incidents of unrest in New York, where more than 150 protests erupted to obstruct ICE operations, with local authorities responding promptly. The New York Police Department stated that anyone who confronts law enforcement officers will face charges.
