Austin Wells’ Ups and Downs This Season
This year has been quite challenging for Austin Wells. He started off living up to the expectations set the previous season but later faced a decline.
Even on what might have been his best night yet, it ended in disappointment with a 10-7 loss to the Boston Red Sox. Wells had a solid contribution, hitting a double and a three-run homer early in the game. He even had a chance to tie it up late in the eighth inning but was unable to take advantage against former Yankee pitcher Justin Wilson.
Still, his performance might serve as an inspiration for left-handed catchers, showing that success is possible in that position.
“I expect a lot from him offensively,” said Aaron Boone. “He can compete well against top lefties.”
Wells gave the Yankees their only lead of the night, hitting big against Crochet. However, he hasn’t been able to help stabilize Ryan Yarbrough’s starts, despite Yarbrough being a standout since joining the team after opting out of playing with the Blue Jays.
After Yarbrough struggled early, Wells aimed to bring his team back into the game. But even then, he faced challenges, as Crochet limited left-handed batters effectively throughout the season.
“I had to deal with two pitches,” Wells mentioned about his at-bats.
While he has hit 10 home runs, his batting average has hovered just over .200 for much of the year. His variable offensive performance became a topic of conversation, especially with the All-Star discussions heating up as the Red Sox came to town.
The Yankees remain hopeful that Wells will tap into his offensive potential while continuing to impress behind the plate.
“Hopefully those small things will lead him to a hotter streak,” Boone reflected on Wells’ performance over the weekend.
