Democrats Urge Increased Action Against ICE

On Saturday, members of the Los Angeles City Council, affiliated with the Democratic Party, encouraged demonstrators opposing law enforcement to intensify their efforts against Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents and to clear the area surrounding immigration sites.

The councillor, Eunisses Hernandez, who identifies as a community organizer and is the child of Mexican immigrants, is noted on the California government site as having been born in Highland Park.

In a video, Hernandez expressed, “They’re aware of how quickly we mobilize and the need for changing tactics, because community defense is effective. Our resistance disrupts them, so if they’re escalating, we will too.” This remark came during a tense situation where protests were aimed at obstructing the enforcement actions against undocumented immigrants in downtown Los Angeles, as reported.

Some protesters were seen throwing eggs and shouting to alert others about the impending raids. Meanwhile, footage captured by KTLA showcased law enforcement officers facing off against demonstrators, many of whom were blocking streets and throwing objects at police vehicles. At one point, a car was noted to be on fire in the middle of the intersection.

Early Friday, law enforcement apprehended over 40 individuals during the execution of a search warrant in Los Angeles, which sparked outrage among various city officials and immigration advocates.

In reaction to the unrest, the Trump administration announced the deployment of the National Guard to Los Angeles. President Trump has reportedly signed a memorandum to send 2,000 National Guardsmen to assist in managing the violence directed toward ICE agents.

Additionally, on Saturday night, the White House shared a social media message featuring an image of the American flag, emphasizing the importance of “law and order.” US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth also highlighted the escalating situation, stating, “Violent mob attacks on ICE and federal law enforcement are intended to disrupt the removal of criminal aliens, creating significant national security risks.”

He further asserted that under President Trump’s administration, any violence against federal agents or facilities will not be tolerated and stated that the National Guard is being mobilized right away to support law enforcement in Los Angeles. If the unrest persists, active-duty Marines stationed at Camp Pendleton could also be deployed, as they are currently on high alert.
