Michigan Senate Democrats Approve Ban on Bump Stocks and Rules for 'Ghost Guns'

The Michigan Senate Democrats on the Judiciary Committee advanced a bill on Thursday to ban bump stocks and require serialization for “ghost guns.”

State Senator Dana Polehanki (D) introduced SB 224, aimed specifically at prohibiting bump stocks. She referred to these devices as “destructive war weapons,” emphasizing, “These are not tools for sports or self-defense. Their availability endangers our community by enabling significant harm in mere seconds.”

A bill addressing “ghost guns” was brought forth by State Senator Mallory McMorrow (D), which would make it illegal to purchase, own, or distribute firearms that lack a valid serial number.

McMorrow stressed the need for gun control laws to keep pace with advancements in weapon manufacturing, stating, “As new weapons production methods develop, our laws and safety measures must evolve too. The community deserves better.”

In addition, further gun control efforts led by State Senator Rosemary Bayer (D) aim to prohibit concealed and open carry on the grounds of the Michigan State Capitol and the Anderson House Office Building.

Bayer explained her reasoning, suggesting that armed citizens have created an environment of “blackmail” that obstructs lawmakers from backing certain legislation.

On June 2, 2025, it was noted that lawmakers in the Oregon Senate also passed legislation to ban bump stocks, and Oregon law permits localities to restrict firearm carrying in places where public meetings are held.
