Young TikTok User Calls for Change in Payment Frequency
Len Adelina, a 21-year-old TikTok user, has been attracting a lot of attention with her recent declarations about the bi-weekly wage cycle used in Australia. She claimed in her videos—gaining over 700,000 views—that payments every two weeks should be banned.
“Honestly, it just needs to stop,” Adelina asserted. “I feel rich for a week; I really do! But then suddenly, I’m back to scraping by.”
Data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics shows that most workers there are on a two-week pay cycle, followed by weekly and monthly payments.
Speaking with news.com.au, Adelina reiterated her stance, emphasizing the need for more frequent payments. “If I were paid weekly, my expenses would be much easier to manage,” she said, indicating that budgeting could be simplified that way.
She went on to express how challenging it can be to manage money when you receive a large sum at once. “We get excited and tend to spend it all on food, shopping, going out, you name it. But then, once it’s gone, the wait until the next payday feels endless.”
She humorously added, “Maybe I am just addicted to shopping.” However, she isn’t just making complaints without solutions. “I definitely think switching to weekly payments could help,” she said.
Adelina’s call for change sparked varied reactions online. Some commenters cautioned her to brace for monthly payment cycles, to which she replied, “Oh no, that sounds terrifying!”
Others humorously labelled monthly paychecks as “criminal” and expressed their own struggles with budgeting, regardless of how often they got paid.
Interestingly, many chimed in about their experiences with monthly pay, claiming it wasn’t as bad as she might think. “I count my coins every month,” one person noted. Another said, “Every adult I know is paid monthly. It can be tough.”
As the conversation unfolded, it was clear that some believed the issue lay not with how often one gets paid, but rather with how that money is managed. “Just put together a budget; it’s not that complicated!” a commenter suggested. “I love getting paid every two weeks,” another added. “I break it in half and set some aside right away.”
