Trump’s 21st week features discussions on trade with China, a travel ban, and issues with Musk.

President Donald Trump and his administration are gearing up for a busy week, the 21st of the year, with significant trade discussions with China set for Monday in London. This week also sees ongoing attempts to manage unrest in California, where crowds are protesting against federal immigration officials.

Trade Talks with China

On Friday, Trump announced via Truth Social that Treasury Secretary Scott Bescent, Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick, and U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer will head to London. They’ll be continuing trade talks with China after tariffs have been imposed by both nations. The timing follows a recent phone call Trump had with Chinese President Xi Jinping, discussing trade agreements.

“I had a very good call with President Xi, discussing some of the complexities created recently and agreeing to a trade deal,” Trump noted after their conversation, which lasted about an hour and a half, expressing positivity for both nations.

The recent back-and-forth on tariffs escalated significantly, with Trump’s administration imposing tariffs on Chinese goods of up to 145% in response to China’s actions. Earlier last month, the two countries reached a trade agreement, although Trump has claimed that China has not adhered to the terms.

Travel Bans Implemented

This past Wednesday, Trump introduced travel bans on individuals from twelve countries, stating that these nations posed security risks. The travel restrictions will take effect on Monday, affecting countries like Afghanistan and Iran, among others. In a social media video, Trump underscored that recent terrorist attacks highlighted the dangers of allowing unvetted foreigners into the country.

Critics quickly condemned the travel ban, dubbing it reminiscent of a “Muslim ban.” Trump’s administration, however, asserts the necessity of such measures following recent incidents that raised red flags regarding national security.

Unrest in California

Over the weekend, protests erupted in Los Angeles as federal immigration officials mobilized for raids aimed at undocumented immigrants, a key part of Trump’s promise to enforce stricter immigration policies. Demonstrators took to the streets, clashing with law enforcement, vandalizing vehicles, and looting. Following the unrest, Trump ordered 2,000 National Guard personnel to assist law enforcement.

The situation drew sharp responses from California Governor Gavin Newsom, who called the federal actions “chaotic and reckless,” advocating for the need to treat immigrants with compassion. In a statement, Newsom criticized the administration for using tactics that could erode trust and tear communities apart.

Newsom’s office even compared the situation to sports celebrations, citing how fans react after significant wins, to underscore the complexity of the protests and responses. He pointed out that not all riots stem from anger at immigration policies, but rather from a mix of social and civic frustrations.

Elon Musk’s Critique

Meanwhile, tensions have flared between Trump and tech billionaire Elon Musk. Following Musk’s departure from his government post, he criticized a substantial spending bill supported by Trump, calling it wasteful. Musk’s remarks have sparked back-and-forth exchanges between the two, showcasing a once-cozy relationship that has cooled considerably.

Trump expressed disappointment, suggesting that Musk had previously supported the interests outlined in the bill but shifted his stance unexpectedly. Musk, in turn, accused Trump of promoting an agenda that he felt undermined significant progress.

This week seems to promise not just high-stakes negotiations but also an intensification of existing tensions, both in our domestic and international spheres, making for a week that could shape future policies and political landscapes.
