Hispanic Caucus seeks cooperation with law firms in response to Trump’s targeting

The Hispanic Caucus in Congress has urged law firms to “continue their important work” as they face increased pressure from the Trump administration, which has rolled out several measures perceived as targeting the legal profession.

These actions, hinted at being designed to instill fear, particularly involve those engaging in legal work that could conflict with the White House. For instance, a directive issued in March mentioned potential sanctions against what it termed “troubling” lawsuits.

This encompasses free legal services offered to immigrants and the backing from major firms that challenge Trump’s policies, including his immigration regulations.

In an open letter to law firms, the Caucus highlighted the mounting risks and pressures experienced by legal professionals.

“We are writing to express our strong support for those lawyers and organizations facing unconstitutional attacks from Trump,” the letter stated. “As members of the Hispanic Caucus, we remain committed to opposing measures that undermine the foundational principles of fairness and freedom in our country.”

While Congress’s capacity to directly instruct law firms is limited, they can collaborate with these entities.

An aide from the Caucus mentioned potential support avenues for legal professionals. “I’ve been involved in some Amicus briefs, and I think this is a valuable way to demonstrate solidarity against bullying tactics aimed at the legal profession,” the aide remarked.

“We’ve also been discussing the need for oversight in certain jurisdictions.”

Trump has issued several executive orders targeting specific businesses, which could hinder lawyers’ access to security clearances and threaten their ability to enter federal buildings.

In response, some law firms have committed to providing pro bono services to millions, while others have taken legal action, often succeeding by persuading judges that such orders amounted to retaliation.

One of the Caucus’s significant concerns is that these targeted actions from Trump could deter firms from offering their support. “It’s a shameful tactic intended to strip rights from people, and sadly, it’s pushing many businesses providing free legal services to the edge,” the aide added.

“We hope to reassure them that they are not alone in facing these threats.”
