Patricia Heaton’s Upcoming Role in The Ritual
Actress Patricia Heaton is gearing up to star in a horror film inspired by a real-life exorcism that took place in 1928, titled The Ritual. Heaton, portraying the boss of a character known as the nonsense mother, emphasizes the film’s basis in reality and its goal to awaken viewers to the concept of spiritual warfare.
“It’s not about spinning your head or vomiting pea soup,” she noted, adding that while it includes some classic horror elements, the film is more grounded. “It’s a rough film rooted in reality. Its smaller scale makes it more impactful because it’s relatable.”
In the film, Heaton plays Mother Superior, a Polish-born nun in charge of a secluded Iowa Abbey during that period. Her character strives to maintain peace amidst the spiritual and physical challenges that surround her.
“I loved her character immediately,” Heaton reflected on Mother Superior. “Typically, Hollywood portrays religious figures, especially nuns, in a silly light. My own experience with Dominican nuns has shown me that they’re highly educated and skilled. The script truly honors their strength and complexity.”
She mentioned that conversations around spiritual warfare can make people uncomfortable, even within the church. “It’s acceptable to say people believe in God, but there’s hesitation around the idea of believing in Satan,” Heaton remarked, citing a sermon by her late friend Tim Keller.
“However, Jesus talks extensively about Satan. He was tempted in the desert. It’s a very real phenomenon,” she stated, echoing the apostle Paul’s message in Ephesians 6:12 about the struggles beyond the physical.
“We are not dealing with mere flesh and blood, but with principalities and powers of darkness,” Heaton explained. “I hope the film encourages viewers to consider their spiritual lives—maybe even return to church.”
“Prayer is a powerful tool,” she added. “Especially when done in community—whether it’s with your spouse or your church family. And for Catholics, the sacraments can be a strong source of protection and spiritual growth.”
Heaton approaches this role with a sense of duty and humility, despite her Hollywood success. “At the end of the day, it’s just a movie. There’s a lot of technical work involved, but emotional investment is key. The story tackles the reality of evil. It’s one of those narratives that you need to engage with.”
“As I often think,” she continued, “Satan has lost the ultimate war, but that doesn’t mean we should let our guard down.”
The Ritual, currently showing in theaters, also features notable actors like Al Pacino, Dan Stevens, Ashley Greene, and Abigail Cowen. The story draws inspiration from Emma Schmidt’s accounts, detailing one of the most famous exorcists in American history.
