Greta Samberg Claims Interception by Israeli Forces
Swedish climate activist Greta Samberg reported early Monday that she was “taken” by “Israeli occupational forces” while attempting to reach Gaza on her ship with a crew.
The Israeli Foreign Ministry had previously announced the interception of an activist ship, which was on its way to Gaza, involving Samberg.
In a video shared by the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs, passengers from the ship were seen wearing life jackets and receiving sandwiches and water.
Previous reports indicated that Samberg, along with other notable figures like actor Liam Cunningham from Game of Thrones and European Parliament member Lima Hassan, was part of a journey organized by the Fleet of Freedom.
In another social media post, the Israeli Foreign Ministry mentioned that Samberg’s “selfie yachts” were carrying “a single truck aid,” noting that over 1,200 aid trucks had entered Gaza from Israel in the last two weeks.
“The ‘celebrity selfie yacht’ is safely making its way toward Israel’s coast,” the ministry stated, adding that the passengers would eventually return home. It also pointed out that the incident seemed more about publicity than substantial aid, especially given the vast number of aid trucks already entering Gaza.
Israel’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs underscored that real humanitarian assistance could be delivered to the Gaza Strip without the involvement of social media selfies. They emphasized that the small amount of aid coming from such yachts was not a replacement for actual humanitarian channels.
Before the interception, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz announced that he had instructed the military to prevent the ship from reaching Gaza, highlighting Israel’s opposition to attempts to breach blockades or support terrorist groups.
In response, the Fleet of Freedom shared videos claiming that the Israeli army had “taken” people aboard the ship.
