Family's dog 'Zeus' pulled into a Florida pond by a giant alligator and surprisingly survives

Dog Survives Gator Attack in Florida

A family dog named Zeus faced a terrifying ordeal when he was nearly bitten by an alligator. According to his owner, he somehow managed to escape from the jaws of the creature and drag himself from his backyard to a nearby pond.

“The vet mentioned that the alligator barely missed his jugular vein. It felt like Zeus’ entire head was in its mouth. His survival is nothing short of a miracle,” the family mentioned in a GoFundMe post.

The vet expressed disbelief as well, saying, “I really don’t know how he made it,” the family added.

On the night of June 2nd, Zeus, a German shepherd, heard a noise and rushed outside through the dog door, only to encounter the alligator that had broken through a fence, seizing him and pulling him into the pond.

“My dad was frantic—I’ve never seen him that way. He’s usually tough. He said, ‘The alligator took Zeus!'” shared Susan Alhhatib, Zeus’s owner.

In a moment of sheer dread, they watched as Zeus struggled while the alligator held him tightly in its jaws.

Eventually, Zeus found a way to escape, and the alligator swam away.

“The alligator just released him,” Alhhatib recounted on WFLA. “We were all screaming as he approached us, tired but alive.”

Susan’s mother rushed to the pond and quickly took Zeus to a veterinary hospital for urgent surgery.

Since the incident, the family hasn’t felt safe at home. “We have a dog door, and Zeus usually comes and goes freely. But now, it’s… different,” Alhhatib said.

They even recorded a video of the alligator on that same morning, lurking along the water’s edge.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Board was alerted, and a trapper was sent to the area, though the alligator has so far evaded capture.

Despite the harrowing attack, Zeus is gradually recovering. He suffered a broken jaw and a puncture wound that required his jaws to be manually adjusted and wired together by the vet.

Currently, he is on a liquid diet, which he is taking from a syringe, and will need another surgery in about eight weeks. He also must wear a muzzle for at least a month.

A recent photo shared by the family shows Zeus healing from the surgery, with some wounds visible around his neck and face, as much of his fur had to be shaved off.

“Still, Zeus remains a brave little guy,” the family wrote in their latest GoFundMe update. “He has plenty of love and care surrounding him.”
