Trump's plan to maximize Alaska's energy resources for national security

Alaska’s Energy Potential

Alaska is positioned as a significant energy hub for the United States, playing a crucial role in energy independence, economic growth, and national security.

Holding about half of the nation’s coal resources, the state ranks fourth in proven crude oil reserves and second in natural gas reserves, trailing only Texas.

On his first day in office, President Donald Trump recognized the untapped potential of Alaska’s resources, issuing a pivotal executive order aimed at harnessing them. He argued that leveraging these resources could lead to lower prices for Americans, help address trade deficits, and create high-paying jobs while enhancing the U.S.’s energy dominance on the global stage.

The U.S. doesn’t need to depend on foreign energy sources to power vehicles or heat homes; relying on other countries can be costly and risky. History has shown us this vulnerability, most notably during the 1973 Arab oil embargo, which turned gas stations into scenes of long lines and shortages.

By increasing domestic production of oil, gas, and coal, we could significantly reduce energy costs for electricity and transportation.

Trump’s executive order marked a move against previous restrictions that hindered Alaska from responsibly developing its resources. This could potentially revive both the energy sector and the overall economy.

Alaska: An Energy Treasure Trove

Upon traveling across Alaska recently, it became abundantly clear just how vast its natural resources are. From the Arctic coastal plains to the north slopes, the state’s potential is immense.

A geological survey estimates Alaska could hold between 160 billion to 5.5 trillion tonnes of coal, yet only one coal mine operates currently, supplying around 1.2 million tonnes each year to nearby states and international allies. Additionally, these mines house vital minerals crucial for modern life—a reality that was highlighted during Trump’s first term as he took steps to secure essential minerals for national security.

Alaska is rich in minerals, including graphite, lithium, and rare earth elements. Currently, the U.S. imports all the flake graphite needed for lithium-ion batteries, but Alaska has the ability to supply this domestically.

While the state is a significant player in oil and gas production, much of its natural gas remains untapped due to insufficient pipeline infrastructure. During Trump’s initial term, the oil and gas sector in Alaska supported a substantial number of jobs and contributed considerably to the state’s GDP. Contrast this with previous administrations that halted drilling in key areas, stifling opportunities for economic growth and energy security.

Trump’s vision of unlocking Alaska’s extensive resources could potentially generate vast revenues and create numerous jobs. This push could propel the U.S. closer to energy independence.

Listening to Native Voices

On my recent trip, I engaged with members of the Chenega Tribe and the Shenega Regional Development Group. Their warmth, resilience, and openness to energy development struck me. While many Alaskans live in urban areas, a significant portion of Native Alaskans reside in more remote communities.

One local elder expressed a desire to not be stuck in the past, recalling the struggles of living without basic amenities like electricity and running water. It’s a harsh reality when inadequate energy access leads to serious issues, including hypothermia during harsh winters.

Access to reliable power and heating is essential for all Americans, and we shouldn’t let climate concerns obstruct access to these vital energy resources.

It’s possible to generate energy, boost the economy, create jobs, and safeguard the environment simultaneously. This isn’t just a choice between two extremes; it’s about addressing urgent needs for humanity and national security.

Alaska’s remarkable resource potential could facilitate a revitalization for America, ushering in a new era of success.
