Media and Democrats minimize the violence during the anti-ICE protests in LA

Recently, there’s been a lot of discussion among media outlets and certain Democratic politicians about the protests happening in Los Angeles, particularly the term “peace.” Despite incidents of rioting and violence that resulted in property damage and injuries to police, they’ve tried to emphasize a peaceful narrative. Senator Alex Padilla mentioned, on MSNBC, that most protesters are peaceful, highlighting their passion.

Senator Cory Booker also chimed in, attributing some of the chaos to the mixed messages coming from the president. On CNN, California Democrats expressed uncertainty over whether the violence is as widespread as reported. Meanwhile, some local media noted a troubling enthusiasm from outsiders who seem to relish the conflict between police and protesters.

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass downplayed the extent of the violence, suggesting it wasn’t as extreme as some might think based on media coverage. However, the visuals of unrest across the nation certainly suggested otherwise. In an interview, she made it clear that not all of Downtown Los Angeles was engulfed in chaos.

Amidst this turmoil, Democratic Council Member Nanette Barragan accused the current administration of targeting peaceful protests. Tensions escalated further with reports of protesters damaging property and even burning flags.

Former Vice President Kamala Harris stirred some controversy when she described the situation as “overwhelmingly peaceful.” This remark was met with skepticism, especially as former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton pointed out that Governor Newsom hadn’t called for National Guard assistance, and criticized President Trump for sending them without local requests.

While the protests began peacefully, events quickly spiraled into violence, with numerous reports of law enforcement being attacked, and property destruction becoming rampant. The Department of Homeland Security issued statements highlighting the assaults on federal law enforcement and the chaos that ensued. Several police officers were injured in the fray, leading to arrests and heightened tensions.

Social media commentators, particularly from conservative circles, have criticized the portrayal of protests as largely peaceful, underlining the stark reality of the violence witnessed. In response to the unrest, President Trump deployed the National Guard, which infuriated local Democratic leaders and generated further discussion about how to handle the situation.
