Two teenagers charged with killing a homeless man reportedly took selfies with a gun, according to police.

A 23-year-old homeless man was found shot to death in his tent by two teenagers in New Mexico, according to local authorities.

Christopher Sturlson had been living in Arroyo, Albuquerque. His body was discovered by community safety department workers on the morning of May 1st.

“We have two teenagers accused of killing a homeless person,” a police representative commented, expressing frustration over the rise in such incidents.

Officers from the Albuquerque Police Department responded to reports of gunshots captured by ShotSpotter technology, indicating about ten shots fired around 9 PM on April 30th. They later identified Sturlson.

That same night, the system recorded six additional gunshots in the vicinity between 10:15 PM and 11:50 PM.

Authorities were able to identify and apprehend the suspects, 18-year-old Joshua Curtis and a 17-year-old, through surveillance footage. They recovered bullet casings from the scene and discovered a photo of the two with a firearm.

The younger suspect was reportedly on probation for a gun-related incident at Sandia High School in 2022, while the older one has a record that includes charges for assaulting an officer.

Bernalillo County District Attorney Sam Bregman indicated that the fatal shooting underscores systemic failures.

“Frankly, the level of frustration lies at the boiling point. This marks the 47th boy charged with murder since I took office as district attorney,” Bregman stated.

He expressed concerns about the consequences of failing to reform the juvenile justice system.

“If we don’t act, we’ll continue to see these tragic outcomes. We aren’t teaching our kids anything productive,” he explained.

Bregman also noted that if convicted, the juvenile could face significant prison time, highlighting the missed opportunity for both the victim and the youth involved.
