Man Identified in Connection with Injury to Federal Officer During L.A. Riot

Authorities have identified a man accused of injuring a federal officer by throwing rocks during protests in Paramount, California, as violence in Los Angeles escalates.

The suspect is reported to be 40-year-old Elpidi Oreina, who allegedly hurled rocks at a U.S. Border Patrol vehicle. This incident took place just after a standoff between ICE agents and demonstrators unfolded in the area.

As Border Patrol agents left their staging area on Saturday, they encountered left-wing protesters nearby, some of whom began throwing glass bottles and chunks of cement. In response, law enforcement deployed tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse the crowd.

Chief Gregory Bovino of the El Centro Sector stated that one agent suffered serious injuries from a rock. In conjunction, the FBI has been investigating the incident closely, utilizing social media and other reports to track down potential suspects.

U.S. Attorney Bill Essaylie remarked on the case, indicating that images and video evidence purportedly show Oreina engaging in these violent acts against law enforcement.

In a social media post, Essaylie noted, “Elpidio Reina can run, but he cannot hide.” He characterized the incident as a serious attack that could result in grave consequences. Oreina has been indicted for assault against a federal officer, with the possibility of facing up to eight years in prison if found guilty. The FBI is also offering a $50,000 reward for information leading to his arrest.

Despite the violence, Bovino emphasized that Border Patrol agents would not be deterred in their immigration enforcement efforts.

In response to the unrest, the administration has dispatched the National Guard and hundreds of Marines to Los Angeles to help regain control, as reported by Breitbart.

During the unrest, there were reports of demonstrators displaying Mexican flags, burning American flags, and engaging in violent confrontations with police, as well as looting and vandalizing vehicles. The protests have reportedly expanded to other cities, including Austin, Dallas, and San Francisco.

Footage from the protests shows individuals in Los Angeles throwing large landscaping rocks at police vehicles.

Amid the ongoing chaos, ICE agents continued their operations, apprehending individuals classified as serious offenders, including those involved in crimes against children. Deputy Director of Homeland Security, Tricia McLaughlin, stated that these offenders are among those arrested during the recent operations in Los Angeles.
