Investigation into police helicopter used on teens during Senior Cut Day

Federal Investigation into Nassau County Police

Federal authorities are looking into the Nassau County Police Department due to an incident where officers attempted to disperse around 500 teenagers gathered at Jones Beach for what was promoted on social media as “Senior Cut Days.”

On Thursday, a large group of teens arrived at Jones Beach in New York, which had been hyped online, encouraging significant turnout. Eyewitnesses reported chaos quickly ensued once they arrived.

A helicopter from the Nassau County Police hovered over the gathering, stirring up a cloud of sand. A spokesman for the Federal Aviation Administration mentioned that they are examining the police’s helicopter usage during this event.

The FAA official stated, “The investigation is underway. Aircraft, including helicopters, must adhere to a minimum altitude rule unless necessary for takeoff or landing.” The regulations indicate that helicopters should not operate below 1,000 feet near obstacles.

Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman spoke about the situation, suggesting that the police’s response likely prevented further injuries. “We believe the actions by the NCPD Aviation Helicopters helped to break up the large crowd engaged in fighting and other destructive behaviors,” he said.

Police took action to limit access to the beach on that day to control the violence. Thankfully, no injuries were reported during these events.

Witnesses noted a stark contrast from their earlier experiences; one person commented, “This beach used to be peaceful. We came as kids, and it was calm. Now it’s just… well, crazy.”

Authorities confirmed that multiple fights had erupted among the crowd, leading to a measure of concern about safety and order.
