4 foods to boost your sex life — and some that dampen desire

Elevate the Kitchen, Elevate the Bedroom

Aphrodisiacs are often foods or herbs thought to spark desire or enhance performance. While many think of dark chocolate and strawberries, they aren’t the only options out there.

Long Island’s Registered Dietitian, Chef, and Nutritionist Nicolette Pace shares that there are four key recipes you can try to boost your romantic life, satisfying your cravings along the way.

It’s best to enjoy these dishes about an hour before your evening plans. “You don’t want any cramps or unexpected stomach issues during those important moments, so keep meals light,” Pace advised.

Oysters and Shellfish

The legends surrounding oysters as aphrodisiacs date back to ancient Greece, linked to the goddess of love, Aphrodite. They’re rich in lean protein and minerals, particularly zinc.

“Zinc helps regulate testosterone and dopamine, both crucial for desire, blood flow, and overall performance,” Pace mentioned.

She recommends preparing oyster gratin with sautéed shallots, sherry, and parsley over fresh or frozen oysters. Topping it with panko breadcrumbs mixed with Parmesan and a drizzle of olive oil before baking gives it a delightful finish.

If oysters aren’t your thing, shrimp can deliver just as much excitement. Marinate them with basil, oregano, garlic, and citrus for a flavorful boost.

Rib Eye

The “more bones, more moans” phrase rings true here. Pace emphasizes that rib eye is an unbeatable choice for a hearty meal.

This cut is rich in protein, vitamin B, zinc, selenium, iron, and has a touch of sweetness. To avoid a heavy feeling that could cloud the mind, she suggests a “naked marinade” made of apple butter, apple cider vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, and coconut oil.

Potatoes

Instead of opting for starchy sides that may induce sleepiness, consider the energy-boosting qualities of potatoes. The vitamin B helps convert carbohydrates into usable energy, which is ideal for an active evening.

Pace suggests pre-cooking thick potato slices or wedges, then tossing them with sea salt, pepper, chopped garlic, and olive oil before baking until crisp.

Watermelon

For a refreshing and enjoyable treat, watermelon has earned the title of “Natural Viagra.” It’s packed with citrulline, an amino acid that helps produce nitric oxide.

This compound relaxes blood vessels and enhances blood flow throughout the body, which can positively impact male performance. To enjoy it, Pace recommends grilling sliced watermelon with a sweet mix of honey or coconut sugar, lime, and seasonal herbs.

Avoid These Foods

  • Steer clear of low-carb, high-fat, or heavily processed foods, as they may induce feelings of lethargy.
  • While a bit of alcohol can boost mood, excessive drinking could lead to a less enjoyable experience for both partners.
  • Too much caffeine can raise stress levels and diminish sexual desire, so it’s wise to hydrate with electrolyte drinks or flavored water instead.
