Michael Tate Addresses Substance Abuse and Assault Allegations
A renowned Christian music artist has acknowledged that he is “mostly true” regarding allegations of substance abuse and sexual misconduct involving other men.
Michael Tate, former member of the bands Newsboys and DC Talk, took to Instagram recently to share what he referred to as “my confession.” He disclosed that reports concerning his reckless behavior are, unfortunately, quite accurate. “For about 20 years, I used cocaine, misused alcohol, and engaged in inappropriate behavior,” he stated.
Tate expressed deep regret over his past decisions, emphasizing that he doesn’t seek to justify his actions. “I just call it what God calls it,” he said.
He has faced scrutiny following an investigation from a Christian investigative journalism outlet regarding accusations stretching back to 2004.
In response to the allegations, Tate’s former band members issued a statement describing their shock and disappointment, stating that they felt “hearts have been crushed” by the news. They emphasized their support for anyone who has experienced sexual assault, urging victims to come forward.
Tate’s departure from Newsboys in January was reportedly in an effort to seek help for his issues. “When he left the band, he admitted to living a ‘double life,'” said the group, indicating that they were unaware of the extent of his struggles.
Michael Tate, now 59, joined Newsboys in 2009 after his tenure with DC Talk. The unfolding situation has raised many questions and concerns within the Christian music community.
