ICE is being sent to Miami for 'security' during the FIFA Club World Cup.

The upcoming FIFA Club World Cup, starting this weekend in Miami, has created some confusion after announcements from the Customs and Border Protection Agency (CBP) and ICE regarding their involvement in providing “security” for the event.

Inter Miami will face Egypt’s Al-Ari Sports Club on Saturday evening, yet it remains unclear if anyone, possibly representing FIFA or Hard Rock Stadium, actually requested federal security assistance. A now-removed Facebook post from CBP suggested the agency was prepared for the occasion, which has only added to the uncertainty.

The ambiguous wording of this statement has left many questioning the exact role of CBP and ICE during the game.

“The message from CBP is somewhat bewildering, implying spectators might need paperwork to attend the game,” remarked Thomas Kennedy from the Florida Immigration Coalition. “It fosters an environment where people may hesitate to show up due to these threats.”

It’s quite rare for border agencies to act as security at sporting events. Typically, the Department of Homeland Security would help with logistical support, particularly post-9/11. However, recent actions by ICE and CBP seem uncharacteristic.

ICE commented when questioned about their role, indicating that the requirement for foreigners to have proof of legal status suggests more than just standard law enforcement support might be in play.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino and Miami-Dade Mayor Daniela Levine Cava aren’t particularly concerned about the presence of ICE and CBP officials at the event. Infantino stated:

“No, there’s nothing to worry about. We are very attentive to security issues. The safety of each fan is our top priority,” he explained.

Levine Cava added:

“Our goal is to ensure the safety of attendees. We collaborate with all safety and law enforcement officials to provide a smooth experience,” responding to inquiries about federal agents’ involvement.

The presence of federal officials brings up various questions. Is this merely a reaction to prior security challenges at events like the Copa America? Who authorized the inclusion of federal immigration officers in the security plan? Is it just regular law enforcement support disguised as event security linked to broader immigration operations?

This lack of clarity has raised significant concerns among fans eager to attend the game this Saturday night.
