Progressives urge Obama to be more vocal against Donald Trump

Some liberals are reportedly expressing discontent with former President Obama, suggesting he has sacrificed his influential voice in favor of a more active role during President Trump’s second term. Adam Green, co-founder of the Progressive Change Institute, pointed out that many people have become more vocal about political issues lately, perhaps even more so than Obama himself.

Interestingly, Obama had a somewhat confusing campaign experience alongside former President Biden before ultimately stepping aside for Vice President Kamala Harris. Since Trump’s victory, he has largely remained out of the public eye, with his last notable appearance being an event in New York where he spoke against Trump.

Green shared his disappointment, stating, “That’s heartbreaking.”

Democratic strategists are starting to question how the Obama-era campaign operatives might influence the party’s future.

Obama did express concerns about Trump attempting to dismantle the post-World War II international order during an April event, hinting that some sacrifices may be necessary to combat Trump’s impact.

“It’s easy to identify as progressive or supportive of social justice, but now, it seems, you actually have to take action to back those claims,” he noted.

Democrat media consultant Tracy Seff argues that Obama should be more active, remarking, “Help me, we’re sinking here.”

While the Obama Foundation hasn’t commented on these remarks, it’s clear there’s some urgency in the air. In a recent article, Obama’s advisor, Eric Schultz, mentioned that the former president is focused on key issues and aims to maintain his voice in the conversation. “There are dilution factors that we are very familiar with,” he expressed.

Eric Holder, Obama’s former Attorney General, emphasized the need for Democrats to avoid normalizing Trump, suggesting that opinions vary on whether Obama should do more. He expressed frustration over comments implying Obama’s absence or inactivity since leaving office.

John Favreau, a former Obama speechwriter and co-host of “Pod Save America,” added that while new stars are needed in the party, he would still hope Obama could step back into the spotlight if Trump attempts a third presidential run. “Parties need a new rising star, much like Obama was two decades ago, capable of meeting the moment,” he stated.
