David Hogg seeks re-election as vice chair amid growing tension within the Democratic Party

DNC Votes to Reselect Vice-Chairs, David Hogg Risks Losing Position

David Hogg, the 25-year-old progressive figure, finds himself in a precarious situation after the Democratic National Committee (DNC) opted to hold a reelection for the vice-chair positions he shares with Malcolm Kenyatta. This resolution, pushed by veteran Democratic activist Kalyn, gained considerable support, with 75% of the votes in favor and only 25% against it, involving about 89% of DNC members who participated.

The DNC announced it would act swiftly to manage the elections for these roles, noting one position must be filled by a man, while the other could be taken by a candidate of any gender. The voting for the male vice-chair position is set to commence tomorrow morning at 10 AM.

It’s a significant political setback for Hogg, who has already caused some stir within the party, especially after his commitment of $20 million to challenge older Democrats in a secure blue district, calling out past leadership as outdated.

Past controversies have also surfaced regarding Hogg’s leadership within the DNC. A leaked Zoom call revealed DNC Chair Ken Martin expressing frustration over Hogg’s actions, implying they undermined the leadership’s image. “I don’t think you intended this, but you essentially destroyed the chance to show the leadership I need, so that’s really frustrating,” Martin reportedly told Hogg.

Despite the rift, Hogg has remained active, recently endorsing a fellow Democrat in a special election to fill a vacant seat in Virginia. Martin, on the other hand, has indicated that the DNC will uphold neutrality during the Democratic primary, presenting Hogg with an ultimatum: either step down from his vice-chairman role or relinquish his political influence through his political action committee.

Interestingly, some current and former DNC officials believe that the push for reelection isn’t solely about Hogg, suggesting that progressive activists have strategically capitalized on the situation to remove him from his leadership role. Hogg himself commented on Martin’s newly proposed “Pledge of Neutrality,” asserting, “I am trying to change the rules because I am not currently breaking them.”

Following the February election, where Hogg and Kenyatta were elected as vice-chairmen, there were accusations regarding the election’s fairness, claiming it violated certain procedural guidelines. The Eligibility Committee eventually recommended a new election due to these irregularities, set for June 12-17, casting doubt on Hogg and Kenyatta’s continued leadership.

Free, another candidate vying for the position, emphasized this was not just about Hogg or Kenyatta. “For me, this was to ensure that Democrats live in our ideals as the only political party to stand up, believing in election integrity and free and fair democracy,” he stated.

Moreover, Kenyatta, who received the most votes in the earlier election, referenced Hogg’s conduct throughout the process, expressing frustration with what he deemed a lax attitude. “The story about this is wrong, which neatly puts this in the story about David Hogg,” he said, emphasizing the complexities surrounding their positions.
