ICE Operations in Los Angeles Prompt Protests
On Wednesday, the Trump administration showcased a range of serious criminal activities involving undocumented immigrants, which sparked violent protests in Los Angeles against ICE operations. These crimes include child molestation, murder, and drug trafficking.
One notable arrest was Emiliano Garduno Garvez, a particularly dangerous individual. He was taken into custody amidst protests on Saturday, facing charges of attempted murder for allegedly throwing a Molotov cocktail at a sheriff’s deputy.
This isn’t Garduno Garvez’s first run-in with law enforcement; he had been deported once before and arrested twice last year. Local police, however, have been criticized for not acting on ICE detainer requests due to California’s sanctuary laws, which effectively allowed him to evade detention, according to the Department of Homeland Security.
Tricia McLaughlin, an official from DHS, commented, “These are the kinds of criminal aliens that rioters are trying to protect. The demonstrations won’t deter our efforts.”
As per White House reports, at least 330 undocumented immigrants have been arrested in Los Angeles thus far.
Alongside Garduno Garvez, ICE pointed out several other criminals apprehended this week, including individuals convicted of severe crimes like murder and child molestation. Among those arrested was Gerald Antonio Palacios, formerly convicted of murder and robbery, who had also faced deportation in the past.
Mab Khleb, a 53-year-old from Cambodia, was discovered to have charges related to drug activity involving a child, along with battery and indecent behavior.
Another arrest involved San Runoprasat, a 66-year-old undocumented immigrant from Laos, who has also been found guilty of inappropriate behavior with a minor.
Other suspects have backgrounds in drug trafficking, assault, money laundering, human smuggling, and robbery, showcasing a troubling trend among illegal immigrants arrested in LA.
In the case of Cuong Chanh Phan, a Filipino national with a previous conviction for attempted rape, he was notable for a violent incident at a high school graduation party in 1994.
Further arrests included Armando Aldaz, 44, charged with sexual assault, and Lionel Sanchez Laguna, 55, apprehended for serious offenses against children and other violent acts.
Garduno Garvez was caught on video at the protest, appearing relaxed while allegedly preparing to throw a Molotov cocktail, showcasing a blatant disregard for safety in the middle of chaos.
With protracted protests entering their sixth day, ICE continued operations unaffected, leading to numerous arrests of individuals with extensive criminal records over the past week.
The disturbances began as a backlash to ICE raids on labor areas, including Home Depot parking lots, which prompted activists to mobilize against federal agents.
Events escalated into riots near the Downtown Detention Center, leading to the involvement of thousands of National Guard members and Marines deployed to manage the situation.
As a result of the protests, some individuals have faced serious federal charges; this includes 27-year-old California resident Wrackkie Quiogue, who was reportedly found with Molotov cocktails and could face lengthy imprisonment.
Others, like Christian Andres Garcia and Renelna, 43, have been charged with assaulting a federal officer, indicating the rising tension around immigration enforcement in the region.
