A former CIA analyst was sentenced to over three years in federal prison on Wednesday for leaking sensitive information regarding Israel’s plans to respond to Iran. Asif William Rahman, 34, had pleaded guilty earlier this year to knowingly retaining and communicating classified details after his arrest last October, when authorities discovered records indicating Israel’s intention to conduct airstrikes following a significant Iranian missile assault.
Rahman, who had been with the CIA since 2016 and held access to top-secret files, used social media to leak critical information that delayed Israeli actions against Iran. He received a sentence of three years and one month, which was less than what the government sought, according to US District Judge Patricia Toliver Giles.
A lawyer from the Eastern District of Virginia remarked, “Rahman betrayed a position of trust by improperly accessing and disseminating crucial documents related to national security.” They highlighted the promptness of the investigation and arrest as evidence of the dedication from law enforcement and prosecutors involved.
On October 17, 2024, while working at the US Embassy in Cambodia, Rahman allegedly took classified documents in his backpack to his home where he photographed them and shared the information with others. The following day, those sensitive documents appeared on a Telegram channel and other social media platforms, complete with classification markings, as stated by the prosecutor.
These documents were based on satellite imagery of Israeli military sites captured on October 15 and 16, which ultimately led to a delay in the planned Israeli assault until October 26.
According to the Department of Justice, Rahman repeatedly accessed and printed classified defense information until his November arrest. While working as a CIA analyst in Virginia, he leaked five classified sets of documents in the spring of 2024, and another ten in the fall, distributing them to unauthorized individuals.
In court, Rahman took full responsibility for his actions, stating, “Last year, I have fully embraced responsibility for my actions. There was no excuse for my actions.” His defense team suggested that his decisions were influenced by personal hardships, particularly related to family issues compounded by the ongoing conflict involving Israel and Hamas, as well as trauma from his time in Iraq.
