Cuomo Campaigns with Bold Claims in NYC Mayoral Race
Just under two weeks into the Democratic primary for mayor of New York City, Andrew Cuomo, the frontrunner and former governor of the state, is drawing attention to uncertainties in Los Angeles while also taking jabs at President Trump. His campaign ad, launched on Thursday, draws a striking comparison, hinting at tumultuous events in LA. “Imagine it’s Times Square. Trump is coming to New York. Who do you think can stop him?” the narrator states.
Cuomo has expressed intentions to lead a national effort to counter Trump’s agenda. He’s particularly focusing on promising to safeguard New York City from what he perceives as impending federal crackdowns on immigration protests. After resigning in 2021 amid several scandals, Cuomo is now trying to make a comeback and is assertively claiming that Trump has “declared war” on New York and other cities, even implying the possibility of federal troops coming to the city.
In his campaign ad, which positions him as the experienced candidate, the narrator states, “Trump is at the city’s gates. We need someone who has experience to shut them down.” A significant new advertising campaign will run across multiple platforms, showcasing Cuomo’s candidacy as he gains traction, especially against progressive candidate Zohran Mamdani, who is now polling second.
Mamdani, a 33-year-old state legislator from Queens, is a person of color and identifies as a democratic socialist, originally from Uganda. His campaign received a lift after being endorsed by prominent progressive figure Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, significantly raising his profile in the race.
As the June 24 primary approaches, Cuomo has started to question Mamdani’s qualifications. An ad reveals, “Who do you think can stop him?” in reference to Trump, highlighting a sense of urgency in the race.
Continuing his campaign narrative, Cuomo’s advertisement portrays Mamdani as inexperienced. “Zohran Mamdani is a dangerously inexperienced 33-year-old who has only passed a few bills,” the narrator argues. “We need someone ready to tackle challenges. Andrew Cuomo has managed crises from Covid to Trump.”
Despite his aggressive campaigning, Cuomo remains under scrutiny for his past. He’s been fighting to clear his name amid eleven sexual harassment allegations in recent years, alongside investigations related to his handling of the Covid-19 pandemic and claims that his administration misrepresented nursing home fatalities.
Recently, the Justice Department initiated a criminal investigation into Cuomo, alleging that he misled Congress regarding decisions made during the pandemic. This adds another layer of complexity as he seeks to regain political footing in the upcoming primary.
