Air India Plane Crash in Ahmedabad
An Air India passenger aircraft, carrying over 200 individuals, tragically crashed shortly after taking off from Ahmedabad, India, on Thursday. Initially, the airline reported no survivors, but later confirmed that at least one person survived the incident.
Flight AI 171, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, was en route to London’s Gatwick Airport when it went down in a residential area known as Meganinagall around five minutes after departure at 1:38 PM local time. There were 242 passengers and crew aboard the flight.
Vidhi Chaudhary, a state trooper, mentioned that first responders discovered one survivor in seat 11A, located next to an emergency exit. A witness, Ramesh Viswashkumar, recounted the experience to the Hindustan Times, stating, “Thirty seconds after takeoff, there was a loud noise and the plane crashed. It all happened so fast.”
Viswashkumar further described waking up amid debris and uncertainty: “I had a body around me. I was scared. I stood up and ran.” He noted that an individual helped him to an ambulance for medical attention, which is all part of a very surreal experience.
While local reports indicated significant casualties, Chaudhary added that around 294 fatalities were confirmed, including several students. The information, however, remains unverified independently. Reports from AP pointed to at least one person surviving, but details were still limited.
The police chief of Ahmedabad had initially indicated that there were no survivors, a statement that underscored the confusion surrounding the event. Consequently, Viswashkumar’s relatives also confirmed communicating with him post-crash, and it was mentioned that he resides in London.
As for the cause of the crash, it’s still unclear. Various videos that surfaced online, purportedly showing the plane’s descent, depict it tilting with its nose upward before crashing into the ground, followed by a fireball.
Air India acknowledged that the aging Boeing 787-8 had departed at 1:38 PM, composed of 230 passengers along with 12 crew members. Tragically, the airline said, “Out of the 242 on board, 241 confirmed deaths were reported. The only survivor is receiving treatment in hospitals.” Among the passengers were 169 Indian nationals, 53 British nationals, seven from Portugal, and one Canadian.
In their statement, Air India expressed profound condolences to the bereaved families and committed to supporting all those affected. The situation, as one can imagine, has brought immense sorrow.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his sorrow over the tragedy, stating that the events in Ahmedabad were shocking and heartbreaking. Similarly, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer called it a devastating incident, especially given the number of British nationals involved.
Rescue teams have been deployed to the crash site, working tirelessly to provide aid. A senior police officer mentioned that they will clear a significant portion of the area in time.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is coordinating with the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) concerning the inquiry into this heartbreaking incident. They stated that if there’s an international incident, they would take charge in leading the investigation.
In summary, this tragedy marks a sobering moment, especially as it involves the first crash of a Boeing 787 in Air Safety Network records. As investigations continue, thoughts remain with all those affected by this disaster.
