New Subpanel Formed by House Ethics Committee
On Thursday, the House Ethics Committee announced the creation of a new subpanel aimed at reassessing and enhancing the rules surrounding campaign activities.
The subpanel will be co-chaired by Republican Rep. Nathaniel Moran and Democratic Rep. Sylvia Garcia from Texas. Their objective is to review the existing regulations that govern campaigns for House members, officers, and staff, with a particular focus on modernizing, clarifying, and strengthening the current framework.
While the rationale behind forming this new group is unclear, there are worries that some lawmakers may be breaching campaign-related regulations.
Previously, in December 2024, the Ethics Committee closed a case involving a lawmaker accused of misusing campaign funds in potentially dubious ways. During that time, committee members expressed the need for clearer guidelines, citing the Federal Election Commission’s regulations as ambiguous.
In recent developments, the formation of this subpanel comes in light of ongoing investigations into Florida Democrat Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick, who is allegedly involved in misusing $5 million in congressional funds. The Congressional Office of Action is investigating claims that these funds were redirected to a for-profit organization instead of their intended recipient, the Figgers Foundation, a nonprofit focused on telehealth in Florida.
Cherfilus-McCormick has previously been the subject of a special investigation following allegations of violations of campaign finance rules during the 2022 special election, and these claims are part of the current inquiry.
The House Ethics Committee has not yet responded to inquiries regarding this matter.
