Magic Johnson’s Take on the Knicks’ Recent Trades
Magic Johnson believes the Knicks have lost some of their edge. He commented on ESPN’s “Rise Up,” expressing concern about the team’s toughness following the trade of Donte DiVincenzo to the Timberwolves as part of a deal involving Karl Anthony Towns.
“When did swagger leave the Knicks?” Johnson asked, highlighting the impact of that trade.
Johnson felt that DiVincenzo was a crucial asset against Indiana’s depth and physical style. Despite the competitive six-game series, he noted the Knicks’ lineup might have felt a bit top-heavy.
“I really appreciated what DiVincenzo brought off the bench,” Johnson said. “New York fans loved him because he was tough and could score.” His one season in New York showcased his capacity as a volume scorer, particularly illustrated during the pivotal second-round matchup against the Pacers.
While injuries limited DiVincenzo’s role, he still managed to average a career-high of 15.5 points in the regular season, proving himself a key offensive player.
Johnson also mentioned, “I’m considering how Kevin Durant fits into the Knicks,” suggesting he could provide valuable support for Jalen Brunson in crucial moments.
This tough persona, as Johnson noted, was evident throughout the season. DiVincenzo wasn’t shy about going up against rival players or defending his teammates.
However, the Knicks still proceeded with the trade involving DiVincenzo and Julius Randle to the Timberwolves. Johnson seems to think it would be a misstep for New York if they fail to capitalize on the opportunity in what could be their first appearance in the conference finals in 25 years.
“He could score 15-25 points off the bench, and they really missed that contribution,” Johnson added, emphasizing the void left by DiVincenzo’s departure.
