Rory McIlroy’s Tough Start at US Open
Rory McIlroy experienced a memorable first round at the US Open, finishing with a four-over par at Oakmont on Thursday. After achieving victory at the Masters, this round didn’t quite live up to expectations.
Interestingly, McIlroy, who usually engages with media, continues to avoid them. Since wearing the green jacket at Augusta in April, he hasn’t spoken with reporters—an unusual choice for someone of his profile in the sport.
He recently remarked at Augusta National, “I want to start this press conference by asking my own questions. What will you talk about next year?” Yet after choosing not to address reporters following last month’s PGA Championship, he again skipped media interactions after his first round, heading straight to the clubhouse instead.
It’s worth noting that while golfers are not mandated to speak to the media, players in other major American sports like the NFL or NBA typically are required to do so.
McIlroy started off strong, even reaching two under par at one point. However, that momentum didn’t last, as he struggled on the final holes. By the end, he found himself eight strokes behind JJ Spaun, who led the pack.
Looking ahead, McIlroy is set to participate in the Ryder Cup once the US Open wraps up. Following his Masters win, he recorded a 12th place finish at the Zurich Classic and seventh at The Truist, but his performance at the PGA Championship was disappointing.
