Inside the Secret Israeli Effort to Undermine Iran

On Thursday night, Israel executed a meticulously planned series of airstrikes aimed at Iran and its nuclear initiatives, shrouded in secrecy according to various reports.

This assertive offensive is thought to have significantly impacted Iranian nuclear personnel, notably targeting many leading scientists, along with compromising their air defense systems. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu purportedly suggested that the attacks would continue until Iran’s nuclear capabilities were fully neutralized. Dubbed “Operation Raisinglion,” the operation commenced following a breakdown in nuclear negotiations between the U.S. and Iran, with Israel and the U.S. reportedly having laid the groundwork through discreet diplomatic efforts.

Brent Sadler, a senior researcher at the Heritage Foundation, commented that this operation has marked a significant moment in military history, involving complex maneuvers that leveraged drones and special forces. The Daily Caller News Foundation noted that the attack has reportedly decimated Iran’s senior military leadership and critically weakened some of its nuclear capacities.

“This marks just the beginning of a lengthy air campaign aimed at ensuring desired outcomes. The U.S. military remains alert and ready for a rapid response if provoked,” Sadler mentioned.

Prior to the airstrikes, Israel coordinated with the United States to create a facade of uncertainty about whether an attack would take place.

American officials, including former President Donald Trump, have previously expressed opposition to Israeli strikes while pursuing diplomatic resolutions concerning Iran’s nuclear ambitions. Such statements, it has been alleged, served to prevent Iran from relocating or concealing its nuclear assets in anticipation of an attack.

“We had a clear U.S. green light,” an Israeli official indicated.

Netanyahu instructed his aides to frame media narratives around a phone call from Trump, purportedly aimed at discussing strategy, but which in reality, was meant to coordinate the assault.

“It’s quite evident that earlier messages from the U.S. were part of a tactic to mislead,” Simone Reden, deputy secretary of defense in the Middle East, mentioned during Trump’s administration. “The public stance from Trump led Iran to lower their defenses and maintain crucial assets. This kind of ruse only functions effectively when both governments are aligned behind the scenes.”

Israel took advantage of Iran’s apparent vulnerability as diplomatic discussions took place.

Mossad operatives inside Iran reportedly targeted high-ranking officials, creating pathways for Israeli jets to approach their targets while using smuggled drones and missiles. Reports indicated that Mossad successfully established undisclosed drone bases within Iranian territory in preparation for the strikes.

This isn’t Israel’s first strike against Iran; they previously retaliated in 2024 following an Iranian assault. Concerns about Tehran’s air defenses were cited during those events.

Iran’s allied groups like Hezbollah and Hamas have also faced significant setbacks since the October 7 attack, which had previously pressured Israel. This downturn in their capabilities makes them less of an immediate threat to Israel. Reports indicate that Iran has sent around 100 weaponized drones in response to the recent Israeli strikes.

Approximately 200 Israeli Air Force jets participated in the operation, with similarities drawn to Ukrainian tactics that have sought to hinder Russian military assets.

It was especially noted that Israeli strikes targeted Iranian Revolutionary Guard commander Hossein Salami, along with a number of other high-ranking military personnel and leading nuclear scientists involved in Iran’s programs.

“The Israeli strikes went straight to the core of Iran’s military and nuclear frameworks,” Ledeen told the Daily Caller News Foundation. “The success in targeting leadership was remarkable. This operation has been meticulously planned, evidently involving the clandestine establishment of drone bases in Iran, showcasing the capability to respond to Iran’s nuclear program almost in real time.”

As of now, the U.S. has not confirmed any details regarding coordination with Israel concerning the airstrikes. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that Israel is acting independently while the U.S. is mainly focused on safeguarding its assets in the region.

Subsequently, Iran has ceased its negotiations concerning its nuclear program with U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkov, as announced on state television. However, Trump has suggested to Iran that there’s still room for negotiation, asserting that he is initiating dialogue with their leadership.

“Iran cannot possess a nuclear bomb, and we wish to return to the negotiating table. We shall see,” he commented.

The White House and the IDF have not offered any comments in response to inquiries from the Daily Caller News Foundation.
