Local GOP leader blames Democratic 'chaos' for Newark ICE facility escape

Newark Mayor Criticizes GOP Leader Amid ICE Detention Center Incident

Newark’s Democratic Mayor, Ras Baraka, publicly condemned the Trump administration during a statement made at a local ICE detention center on Thursday night. He argued that New Jersey GOP chair Kenny Gonzalez was spreading confusion nationwide, minimizing serious criminal actions and violent offenders.

“This all began a few months back in New Jersey. Mayor Baraka faced arrest while trying to enter the facility, and Councilman Ramonica McQuiver physically confronted an ICE officer,” Gonzalez remarked. “Such behavior from a leftist Democrat sends a message that this conduct is acceptable.”

On Thursday evening, four immigrants escaped from the Delaney Hall ICE Detention Center in Newark amid what appeared to be a significant disruption inside the facility. According to reports confirmed by immigration authorities, around 50 detainees acted out after becoming frustrated with delayed meals.

Immigration lawyer Mustafa Setin explained that the detainees damaged a wall in their dormitory as their agitation grew. One of his clients described the wall’s strength as insufficient and mentioned a strong gas odor present during the chaos.

Meanwhile, around 9 PM, a group of demonstrators obstructed an SUV trying to exit the detention center, forcing it to return inside. Observers from PIX11 News noted seeing individuals who had fled running near Turnpike 78 and Delancey Street.

The Department of Homeland Security later classified the fleeing migrants, including individuals with a history of criminal behavior, as a public safety threat. The detainees were identified as nationals from Honduras and Colombia, some previously charged with serious offenses.

In the aftermath, Baraka stated his concern regarding the events at Delaney Hall, mentioning issues of inadequate monitoring and basic rights of detainees. He criticized federal oversight, asserting a need for better communication and transparency regarding local operations.

Gonzalez countered, suggesting that Baraka and other Democratic officials should be held accountable for the events unfolding at the detention center, claiming their actions have fostered an environment that encourages unrest.

As protests are expected to continue over the coming days, Gonzalez expressed worries about escalating tensions in Newark, emphasizing the need for effective law enforcement intervention. Meanwhile, Baraka’s office has not responded to media inquiries on this developing situation.
