Chris Matthews Critiques Obama Amid Israeli Strikes on Iran
Former MSNBC host Chris Matthews made some striking remarks about former President Obama on Friday. This came right after the Israeli Defense Force (IDF) initiated strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed that one of Iran’s significant nuclear sites was targeted in the operation, which also resulted in the deaths of two Iranian generals and over twenty senior commanders.
An IDF spokesperson indicated that the strikes were a response to intelligence suggesting that Iran was closer than ever to developing a nuclear weapon.
During Friday’s episode of MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” Matthews backed the Israeli action, stating that the world could not risk an offensive nuclear conflict with Iran.
Matthews expressed the urgency, noting, “They have to stop them from having nuclear weapons.” He went on to criticize Donald Trump’s 2015 nuclear agreement with Iran, which was a topic of heated discussion during Trump’s presidency.
Matthews recalled Obama’s statement about imposing a time limit on Iran’s nuclear ambitions, mentioning that the deal left many questions unanswered. He quoted Trump’s dismissal of that agreement as “a joke,” implying it wouldn’t effectively halt Iran’s nuclear aspirations.
This critique stood out, particularly since Matthews had previously expressed admiration for Obama during the 2008 election, famously saying he felt a “thrill” when hearing Obama speak.
The White House did not immediately respond to inquiries from Fox News regarding Matthews’ comments.
Matthews further elaborated, suggesting that any negotiations involving Iran must ensure that the capability to produce nuclear weapons is completely dismantled. He reflected on Trump’s 2018 decision to withdraw from the nuclear agreement, calling it “one of the worst and most one-sided deals” the U.S. had ever signed.
He emphasized that Iran’s intentions towards Israel were aggressive, thereby justifying the need for decisive action to curtail Iran’s nuclear program. “He has to stop them from their nuclear route,” he warned, citing the public support for Israel in this context.
On Thursday, Trump mentioned that he was aware of the planned Israeli strikes, encouraging Israel to negotiate with Iran, stating emphatically that Iran must not acquire nuclear weapons.
