New Jersey Rep. Ramonica McQuiver Responds to Accusations
On Friday, New Jersey Democratic Representative Ramonica McQuiver addressed comments made by Tom Homan during an MSNBC interview when host Ali Melver asked if Homan had claimed McQuiver was “pushing” an officer. This discussion comes after federal prosecutors charged McQuiver on May 19 for allegedly assaulting law enforcement at a tense situation outside a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Facility in New Jersey.
During her appearance on “Beat with Ali Melver,” Homan accused McQuiver of being physical with law enforcement. McQuiver reacted by saying, “First of all, I don’t agree with everything he’s saying, which is why there was a long pause when I asked them to win the case because I don’t think he even knew what happened that day.”
She added, “What came out of his mouth was a lot of information that doesn’t reflect the reality of the situation. He didn’t take the tour. So, I don’t agree with everything he’s saying. The bottom line is we’re going to court. All the facts will come out. They’ll be on my side once they get to that point.”
McQuiver, along with Senators Robert Menendez and Bonnie Watson Coleman, had gathered outside the Delaney Hall facility in May. The scene turned chaotic when Newark Mayor Ras Baraka attempted to join them, leading to accusations from the Department of Homeland Security. They alleged that the group confronted law enforcement as detention buses were attempting to enter the facility.
According to U.S. Attorney Alina Haba, McQuiver faces charges of “assault, obstruction, and resisting law enforcement.” Following the incident, McQuiver has denied the charges, stating in an interview with CNN that “there is no video” supporting the claim that she had pushed officers.
