Marjorie Taylor Greene and DOGE Begin Inquiry into Planned Parenthood’s Use of Public Money

Investigation into Planned Parenthood’s Use of Federal Funds

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) and the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) subcommittee have initiated an investigation regarding the use of taxpayer dollars by Planned Parenthood. This started on a recent Friday.

Greene sent a letter to Alexis McGill Johnson, the CEO of Planned Parenthood, expressing concerns that the organization might be misallocating federal funds. She highlighted issues like the removal of federal subsidies, particularly related to abortions and the provision of hormonal treatments to minors with minimal parental oversight. This inquiry was prompted after a pro-life organization unveiled plans aimed at exposing these practices.

The Hyde Amendment restricts federal funding for abortions, and former President Donald Trump had previously taken executive actions to prevent federal money from supporting gender transition procedures for minors.

According to a recent report from Planned Parenthood, the organization received approximately $792.2 million in taxpayer funding between 2023 and 2024, marking an increase of nearly $100 million from the previous year. During this period, over 400,000 abortions were performed, a noticeable rise from the 392,000 reported the year prior.

In her letter, Greene seemed to hold organizations accountable for using federal funds for both abortion services and gender transition treatments for minors. She also referenced allegations concerning the organization’s handling of fetal tissue.

Greene wrote, “Although we receive 39% of our annual revenues from federal funds designated for critical health services, such as cancer screenings and wellness testing, Planned Parenthood appears to be increasingly devoting these resources to abortion services.” She noted that their latest annual report indicates over 400,000 abortions performed, a 23% increase over the past decade.

The letter further mentioned 45 affiliate health centers involved in administering hormone treatments as part of “gender-affirming care,” accusing them of rarely conducting thorough medical or psychological evaluations for minors.

Planned Parenthood’s offering of transition services was characterized by Greene as something that obscures the true scale of their services in this area. She pointed out that, while policies differ across states, some health centers under Planned Parenthood would provide hormonal treatments to 16-year-olds with parental consent.

Greene concluded her correspondence by asking Planned Parenthood for extensive documentation regarding its practices and non-public financial statements dating from January 2020 to June 2025.

“It’s crucial that federal funds allocated to Planned Parenthood under Title X of the Public Health Services Act, Medicaid, and the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) comply with existing laws and regulations,” the letter stated. “The subcommittee seeks documentation related to these services and how taxpayer funds are managed.”

Currently, Republicans are pushing to withdraw funding from abortion providers like Planned Parenthood, as part of Trump’s broader legislative effort. At the time of publishing, Planned Parenthood had not responded to requests for comment.
