Approximately 60 protesters were taken into custody near the U.S. Capitol after they breached a police barricade and approached the stairs leading to the Capitol Rotunda.
This demonstration included veterans and military families who organized the action in response to a military parade set for Saturday. They aimed to protest the deployment of National Guard and active-duty Marines by President Donald Trump in Los Angeles, as per the organizers.
Interestingly, the parade lines up with Trump’s 79th birthday, which adds a unique layer to the event.
This week, the president warned that anyone who protests at the parade would face “a very heavy force.” However, White House spokesperson Caroline Leavitt later clarified that Trump supported peaceful protests.
A separate group of around 75 protesters gathered peacefully at the Supreme Court the night before, according to Capitol Police.
As the protest progressed, about 60 individuals started to disperse, leading officers to set up boundaries with bicycle racks to push them away from the Capitol.
Capitol Police noted, “Several people pushed down the bike rack and crossed the police line illegally as they ran toward the rotunda stairs.” This prompted officers to intervene and make arrests.
Ultimately, around 60 demonstrators were arrested.
Those apprehended are facing charges related to illegal demonstrations and trespassing, while some may also contend with additional accusations like assaulting officers and resisting arrest.
Two individuals were transported to a local hospital for medical treatment.
This protest was put together by two advocacy groups: Veterans Against War and Veterans for Peace.
One spokesperson expressed their goal of fostering a future with a focus on veteran care, healthcare, and education rather than spending a hefty $50 million on a parade.
On Saturday, the Army is set to mark its 250th anniversary with an expected turnout of around 200,000 individuals participating in various events around the Capitol, in addition to the military parade. This celebration is estimated to cost about $45 million and will feature soldiers alongside military equipment such as tanks and aircraft.
