A graduation ceremony at a Northern California high school turned tragic Wednesday night when shots were fired outside the venue, resulting in one death and three injuries. The hunt for the shooter is ongoing.
The incident took place shortly after the Sem Yet High School graduation at Fairfield High School’s Schaefer Stadium.
Authorities report that the shooting occurred after the ceremony had ended, prompting an immediate investigation.
At around 8 p.m., Suisun Mayor Alma Hernandez shared news on social media about three individuals being shot.
She mentioned that there was an active shooter situation at the stadium, and authorities are currently looking into it.
“It was just… traumatic for anyone who witnessed it. It’s really outrageous,” said Fairfield Police Officer Michelle Berrier.
Officer Berrier added, “It’s heartbreaking. I’m praying for those affected. It’s unfortunate they had to experience this.”
The Fairfield-Suisun Unified School District confirmed that police were on the scene shortly after the incident took place.
“Law enforcement is present on campus, but as this is an ongoing investigation, we can’t provide further details right now,” a spokesperson for the district stated. “Our thoughts are with everyone impacted, and we will update you as soon as we can.”
Some live-streamed footage shows that, while the graduation was recorded, the actual gunfire doesn’t seem to have been captured.
One attendee described how the shooting broke out in the parking lot where families and graduates were celebrating with photos.
A father, whose daughter was there to support her friend at the graduation, described his instinct to flee as soon as he heard the shots.
Later that night, Hernandez posted updates about an ongoing pursuit for the shooter in Fairfield, though she kept details minimal.
Police have not disclosed more information as the investigation progresses.
