Tragic Shootings in Minnesota Affect Local Politicians
The Minnesota Twins and Lynx have expressed their deep sorrow following the shootings of two state politicians along with their spouses. The incident occurred in Brooklyn Park, where police report that suspects posing as officers fatally shot DFL Speaker Emerita Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark Hortman.
Additionally, DFL Senator John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, were also targeted in a related incident in Champlin.
The Twins issued a statement saying, “We are horrified and heartbroken by the attempt on Rep. Melissa Hortman and her husband Mark, as well as Sen. John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette.” They extended their condolences to the Hortman family and conveyed hopes for a full recovery for the Hoffmans. The team condemned these senseless acts of violence.
Before a game against the Los Angeles Sparks, the Lynx observed a moment of silence. Lynx head coach Cheryl Reeve reflected on the gravity of the situation, stating, “It seems pretty pointless. Certainly, it hits this close to home. Basketball is what we do, but today is a tough day.”
Authorities issued a shelter-in-place order within a three-mile radius of the Edinburgh Golf Course, where the shootings took place. The suspect, reportedly wearing black body armor and carrying police-style equipment, was able to blend in with genuine law enforcement.
Governor Tim Waltz termed the event an “indescribable tragedy” during a press briefing, noting the significant loss of a prominent leader. He added, “Our state has lost a great leader,” highlighting the commitment and dedication of Melissa Hortman to the community.
While expressing cautious optimism about the Hoffmans’ recovery, Waltz emphasized, “This was an act of targeted political violence. Peaceful discourse is the foundation of our democracy.”
As of now, the suspects involved in the shootings remain at large.
