Protests emerged outside the Gold Cup soccer match between Mexico and the Dominican Republic at Sophie Stadium on Saturday.
During the protest, one participant expressed their frustration with President Donald Trump. Daniel Fuentes, speaking in Spanish, said, “I’m a soccer fan, but today, it’s not about football. It’s not fair what Donald Trump is doing. They’re lifting up people who work by saying they’re not criminals, but they’re furious at our Latinos, claiming we’re the worst.”
Concerns regarding immigration enforcement in Southern California had seeped into the atmosphere around the stadium, with worries about possible immigration enforcement actions impacting the game.
Amid this, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum called for U.S. immigration authorities in Los Angeles to ensure the safety of fans attending the Mexico vs. Dominican Republic game. She stated, “I don’t think there’s anything to fear at a soccer game. We want U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement removed from the situation.” She emphasized Mexico’s commitment to promoting peace.
Fans noted that the tense atmosphere had overshadowed the excitement typically associated with such matches. One man, referred to as “Elcoronel,” remarked, “When a Mexican team plays, it’s usually a celebration, right? But today, it just wasn’t.”
“We don’t feel it’s right to celebrate with music or food when our brothers, sisters, cousins, and mothers are suffering from what’s happening,” said another fan, reflecting the somber mood.
