GOP lawmakers advocate for a bill celebrating fathers ahead of Father's Day

Resolution Highlights the Importance of Fathers

In a timely move for Father’s Day, two Republican officials have put forward a resolution focused on the millions of children growing up without a father—about one in four children in the United States. This initiative underscores the crucial role fathers play in society.

Byron Donald from Florida and Burgess Owens from Utah introduced this resolution earlier this month, aiming to rally policymakers around promoting fatherhood.

Owens, who has six children and 17 grandchildren, emphasized his deep belief in the significance of engaged fatherhood. “When a father is involved, children are more likely to thrive, excel academically, avoid trouble, and build a promising future,” he shared.

This resolution, known as HR 487, which is still awaiting a vote, states that “fatherhood is essential to the development of all children.”

Current statistics indicate that around 18.4 million children, or roughly a quarter of young Americans, live without fathers, which includes biological, step-, or adoptive figures, as reported by the US Census Bureau.

Interestingly, about 80% of single-parent households are led by single mothers, according to a 2022 study.

Donald, who is campaigning for governor in Florida, remarked on the profound impact fathers have. “Their role is a foundation for a child’s growth and lifelong development. Fathers can be providers, caregivers, mentors, and more,” he stated.

He expressed concern over the number of children missing out on this vital influence. “It’s crucial that we break the tragic cycle of fatherlessness in America,” he added, showing pride in collaborating with Owens on this cause.

Former Minnesota Vikings player Jack Brewer, who is actively fighting against the fatherhood crisis, has also backed the resolution. Last week, his foundation inaugurated the National Fathers Center in Washington, DC.

Brewer commented on the urgency of the issue, saying, “We should feel ashamed as the country with the highest rate of fatherlessness and commit to addressing this crisis.” He highlighted the devastation faced by countless vulnerable families, and urged for a concerted effort to implement policies that ensure both parents are present for their children.

This resolution also brings attention to the impact of fatherlessness in minority communities. It suggests various solutions, including initiatives for reentry into the workforce for incarcerated fathers, mentorship programs, and tax incentives for parents, among others.

Moreover, it advocates for first step laws and opportunities in historically black universities (HBCUs) to better support fathers in these communities. The resolution raises alarms about the correlation between lack of father figures and the violence and anxiety present in society today.
