New Bill Targets Funding for Sanctuary Cities
A new proposal introduced by Republican lawmakers aims to suspend housing grants for sanctuary cities such as Los Angeles that do not adhere to federal immigration laws. Senator Bill Hagerty from Tennessee emphasized that cities encouraging illegal immigration should not receive federal housing subsidies, reinforcing the stance of the Trump administration against illegal immigration.
Hagerty, who previously brought a similar bill last year, specifically targets the federal housing funds disbursed through the Community Development Block Grants Program, which has been operating for decades under the Department of Housing and Urban Development. The program’s goal is to aid states and cities in fostering viable urban communities.
This legislative push aligns with President Trump’s larger agenda to address sanctuary cities, which includes the potential withdrawal of federal funding for those failing to follow immigration policies. Sponsored by Representative Ralph Norman, the bill underscores that cities prioritizing the sheltering of illegal immigrants over public safety will be ineligible for taxpayer dollars.
Norman stated, “If you’re trying to ignore federal immigration laws, don’t expect to get federal tax dollars.” He called out the political decisions of sanctuary cities, which he believes sacrifice public safety for political motives.
The bill also defines the jurisdiction of sanctuaries that limit information sharing on immigration status and those with local policies obstructing compliance with federal requests.
Interestingly, housing subsidies had already been on the administrative radar, as President Trump’s recent budget proposal suggested significant cuts to community development programs, including a reduction of around $5 billion, while advocating for the management of such funds at the state and local levels. The Community Development Block Grant Program is responsible for over $3 billion in federal funding annually.
