The NFL’s mandatory minicamp is wrapping up, which means we’re inching closer to the start of the 2025 preseason. With summer here, teams are gearing up, and it’s time to ponder which squads might surprise us and who could take it all.
There are definitely some intriguing dynamics at play within the league. I find myself particularly curious about units—whether it’s the side that finished the previous season strong or the one that revamped its roster entirely. So, which one stands out to me the most as we look ahead to 2025?
New York Jets Offense
Let’s kick things off with the Jets’ offense. It’s pretty electrifying, isn’t it?
I’m not certain if the Jets will be remarkable in Aaron Glenn’s first year, but their free agency moves and draft picks suggest they’re pretty clear about their goals on both sides of the ball. The main thing I’m wondering about is whether offensive coordinator Tanner Engstrand can effectively build a system around QB Justin Fields. There’s a lot to consider. Yes, Fields has his flaws as a passer, but he also possesses incredible potential. Based on their recent decisions, it seems like they’re gearing up to focus heavily on the run game next season. Drafting Armand Membou as a right tackle signals that they’re serious about bolstering a young and athletic offensive line. Plus, with tight ends like Mason Taylor from LSU and running backs Breece Hall and Braelon Allen, the setup could be really dynamic. Fields’ mobility adds another dimension to their attack, which could become quite dangerous.
Honestly, the Jets could end up leading the league in offense this year, and that wouldn’t surprise me at all.
Arizona Cardinals Defense
If you spend enough time on social media dedicated to football, you’ll likely stumble upon discussions regarding the Arizona Cardinals’ defense. It’s a fascinating mix of changing strategies and configurations. They wrapped up half the season within the top 10 for defensive expected points added and maintained a solid success rate. However, diagnosing their pass defense has been tricky given their unique three-safety approach. Yet, they ran with a 44.6% success rate last year, which is not bad.
This season, it’s clear the Cardinals aim to shift the narrative. They invested heavily in defensive players like Edge Josh Sweatt and DTs Curry Campbell and Walter Noren as part of their defensive rebuild. Noren could be a game-changer; his speed and explosiveness make him quite the prospect. Additionally, they selected Will Johnson in the second round to enhance their secondary, and I’m optimistic about what defensive coordinator Nick Laris can achieve with this revamped roster.
Miami Dolphins Defense
Just two spots above the Cardinals in expected points allowed are the Miami Dolphins, who are, in my opinion, one of the league’s more exciting teams. Focusing solely on the defensive side, I really like their potential. Even while they were missing stars Bradley Chubb and Jaelan Phillips for much of the previous season, they still placed fifth in expected points per drop back. Emerging star Edge Chubb Robinson boosts their defense even further as he joins a now-healthy duo of Chubb and Phillips. The roster seems solid overall, with DT Zach Sieler and LB Jordyn Brooks being underrated talents. They’re also adding Kenneth Grant and Jordan Phillips, which should bring more muscle to the defense. If Jalen Ramsey gets traded, though, I find myself questioning how they’ll handle their secondary, which is quite intriguing.
Jacksonville Jaguars Offense
The Jaguars are another unit I can’t wait to watch weekly. This isn’t just the fan in me speaking; I genuinely see potential for this offense to shine under head coach Liam Cohen. With the explosive plays they generated last season, and having significant talent in their skill positions, they could do something special. WR Brian Thomas Jr. is evolving into a superstar, and adding Travis Hunter should only heighten their offensive explosiveness. They also have four versatile running backs ready to contribute. I’m particularly curious about QB Trevor Lawrence. His career has had its ups and downs, yet his talent is undeniable. With Cohen’s history of optimizing a QB’s strengths, it’s reasonable to expect positive developments for Lawrence.
New York Giants Defense
Another New York team, interesting, right? The Giants’ defense has the potential to be quite strong, especially with DT Dexter Lawrence leading the charge. Their front line is capable of applying consistent pressure on QBs, thanks to the dynamic trio of Brian Burns, Abdul Carter, and Kayvon Thibodeau. The Giants’ ability to dictate matchups is a useful advantage. It really comes down to performance in the trenches, and they seem well-equipped there.
What’s notable is the investment they’ve made in the secondary this offseason, signing CB Paulson Adebo and S Jevon Holland to bolster the unit, along with promising rookies Tyler Nubin and Dru Phillips. However, CB Deonte Banks has had a rough start; hopefully, the veteran presence around him helps elevate his game.
New England Patriots Offense
Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel might not be known for being an offensive genius, but I think there’s something intriguing brewing for their offense heading into 2025. They’ve brought in new talents this offseason to strengthen their young QB: drafting LT Will Campbell, RB Trey’on Henderson, and WR Kyle Williams. They also snagged RT Morgan Moses and WR Stefon Diggs through free agency.
What really has me curious is the role of OC Josh McDaniels. He’s shifting to an offensive-focused approach, and I find that exciting. His time managing the team did have its rough patches, but there’s potential here, especially with a young QB. I’m keen to see how this new version of the Patriots’ offense unfolds.
