Newark’s progressive mayor, Ras Baraka, who was recently arrested during a protest outside an ICE facility, isn’t likely to disappear from the New Jersey political landscape despite losing the Democratic nomination for governor last week. Political analysts from both major parties suggest he still has potential.
Insiders mention that Baraka may even be a candidate for lieutenant governor under current Democratic hopeful Mikie Sherrill. He has built a reputation as a progressive leader, and his arrest on May 9th pushed him into the national spotlight.
This month, Baraka filed a lawsuit against a U.S. attorney, Alina Haba, claiming “false arrests and malicious prosecutions” related to the incident. His involvement in the protest included entering the detention center grounds with other local officials and activists.
The lawsuit against Baraka has since been dismissed by the U.S. attorneys involved. “His arrest has made him a heroic figure among New Jersey Democrats,” remarked Kenny Gonzalez, the executive director of the state’s Republican Party.
In an unusual move, Baraka’s campaign actively solicited donations while he was still detained. Text messages sent out included bold statements like “Ras Baraka has been arrested” and emphasized his confrontational stance against what they described as an illegal detention situation.
Local Republican leaders claim Baraka’s actions signal broader unrest within the Democratic Party and suggest his polarizing behavior might enhance his image among supporters. Interestingly, despite being a distant third in early polling, Baraka managed to secure a second-place finish with 20.6% of the vote.
Gonzalez noted that while Sherrill had a far larger campaign budget, Baraka’s boldness resonated with voters, saying, “These stunts have definitely helped him gain traction.” He views Baraka as someone who could easily be considered for a future leadership role due to his strong connections within urban communities.
Some critiques have emerged regarding Baraka’s focus, with Gonzalez stating that he’s not addressing pressing local issues like property taxes and crime rates. He suggested Baraka needed to shift his focus back to his responsibilities as Newark’s mayor.
As for the Democratic landscape, Kevin Hagan, a strategist, pointed out that while Baraka’s actions drew attention, he needs to present a compelling campaign to gain further electoral success. Hagan believes that Baraka’s willingness to take on Trump-like policies resonates with important issues for Democrats, but emphasized that the upcoming campaign will hinge on Sherrill’s choices about who she partners with moving forward.
Looking ahead to November’s elections, Hagan reflected on New Jersey’s historical balance between Democratic and Republican governance, underscoring that maintaining control of the Governor’s office remains a significant challenge for the Democrats.
