Red Sox internal issues revealed following Rafael Devers trade

Red Sox Front Office Turbulence and Trade Decisions

The mute button really played a significant role in a recent debacle.

Red Sox manager Craig Breslow made headlines when he dismissed former scouting manager Carl Moschö earlier this year. This followed a Zoom meeting where Moschö expressed his frustrations, saying, “Thank you, Bress, your f. King staff,” according to reports.

Sheen pointed out in an article that this incident was reflective of a larger “dysfunction” within the organization, particularly in the contentious decision to trade superstar Rafael Devers to the Giants.

One team member described the situation as an “absolute s-show,” particularly in light of the Yankees sweeping the team and the subsequent franchise-altering trade.

It may take years to fully assess the impact of this surprising trade, but the portrayal of the front office paints a picture of disarray.

Breslow, who took over from Chimebloom just before the 2024 season, noted that the organization had become “increasingly insulated.”

Longtime staff members, who had contributed to championship victories in 2004, 2007, 2013, and 2018, reportedly felt marginalized.

According to Yahoo contributor Jun Lee, “The collaborative spirit that once defined the Red Sox baseball business was frayed.”

In May of last year, the team brought in Sport Science, a sports consulting firm, to assist with operations.

This decision reportedly led to feelings of “alienation” among several individuals, prompting a series of firings and the loss of respected voices in the organization.

Moschö, who joined the franchise back in December 2017, made comments this year indicating he thought the Zoom meeting was concluding.

Breslow’s relationship with manager Alex Cora has also reportedly been strained, especially as Cora tries to keep the team’s momentum amid Breslow’s vision for the future.

Cora made his return in October after Boston made the playoffs just once since 2018. This shift could be tied to differing views on gameplay and management priorities between Cora, Bloom, and the front office.

Lee noted that the coaching staff often feels frustrated with how much emphasis is placed on player development, especially regarding swing mechanics and hitting data.

The Red Sox (38-36) have begun a new chapter with a recent 2-0 victory in Seattle, marking their second consecutive win by that score.

Currently, they hold the third wildcard spot and sit just 5.5 games behind the struggling Yankees in the AL East.
