Jay Williams and Stephen A. Smith engaged in a heated exchange on “First Take,” triggered by Smith’s remarks about Giannis Antetokounmpo.
Williams, a former NBA point guard, expressed frustration over Smith labeling Antetokounmpo as an “underachiever.” He called this assessment one of the worst takes he’s ever heard, labeling it as “terrifying.”
“I think we really need to rethink how we approach these discussions,” Williams remarked in a segment on Monday. “If you take the franchise, the Milwaukee Bucks, they have a significant lack of talent around Giannis.”
Williams emphasized that Antetokounmpo led the Bucks to a championship just four years ago. “Saying he’s an underachiever feels, well, a bit absurd,” he commented.
“Given his standing and legacy, conversations about him need to be framed correctly because anyone who truly understands basketball recognizes the greatness within Giannis,” Williams added.
In response, Smith insisted that his comments were misunderstood. He acknowledged Antetokounmpo’s exceptional talent, stating he believes Giannis is one of the greatest to ever play. Smith mentioned, “I have the right to challenge your take as misguided. Perhaps you weren’t paying attention or you were distracted.”
“Giannis ranks among the best ever, and I made it clear that I’m in awe of his abilities,” he asserted.
